Violin Tunings

A compiled list of violin Tunings

During my studies at the Royal Academy of Music in Stockholm and the Norwegian Academy of Music in Oslo, I have been intensely researching, cataloguing and experimenting with violin, fiddle and hardanger fiddle tunings across various musical traditions. I focused mostly on Norwegian folk music, Swedish folk Music and Western art music, but much information comes also from traditional music from the British Isles and North America, and some Eastern European and Middle-Eastern traditions.

The full written thesis and catalogue for this work can be found here.

In this page I have reported a summary of all the tunings I have come across. By clicking on each tuning, you’ll be able to see a few references and, when available, audio examples.

The tunings are named using the Helmholtz pitch notation, from the lowest to the highest string, and they are ordered according by interval (smallest intervals between strings first).

(Note: in Western art music contexts it is very common to refer to alternate tunings with the word scordatura. I personally do not like that word, as it carries the idea of there being a right tuning, while many musical traditions demonstrate the opposite)
